Authentication

We’re now back to authenticating with read permissions only. If you’ve authorized with write permissions already and want to downgrade them to read, remove your Flickr account from Flickr Photosets (make sure you revoke permissions), and reauthorize.

Collections

Flickr has finally made Collections available through their API, so they’re now supported in Flickr Photosets! The Collections tab should automatically appear and can be disabled on the configuration tab.

Collections integration has not been throughly tested, so make sure you report any bugs you encounter to the discussion boards. In addition, it is considered “experimental” by Flickr, so we can’t guarantee that it will work consistently.

Enjoy!

Comments are Back

After some issues with the Intense Debate comment system, I’ve switched to Disqus. You shouldn’t have to log in since Facebook Connect has been activated for the comments.

Stay tuned for more updates…

CC

We just released an update that adds licenses to photo pages. Now each photo will have the license information right below it.

Redesign Launch

The redesign is finally ready and I’ll be launching it on Saturday night. With this redesign you’ll be forced to move to the new Facebook profile because the app will not work with the old profile.

That being said, this update paves the way for some new features that are in the works, including the profile tab, tagging, and news feed stories.

You’ll notice that on the new design there’s a home page. At launch this will have a couple of your recent photos and a couple from your Flickr contacts. What else would you like to see on the home page?

Translations

Beginning with the visual refresh that I hope to launch this weekend, I’ll be adding in hooks for the Facebook Translations app. This means that anyone will be able to start translating Flickr Photosets into other languages besides English.

It can get pretty complicated to code for translations, so there will only be a limited number of words available to translate at first.

Header

One of the things I really want to do with the visual refresh is to simplify navigation and make it more consistent. Originally, it was designed to mimic Facebook Photos as much as possible. This didn’t work out too well, partly because the Facebook design wasn’t very good, but mostly because Flickr is organized differently.

That being said, the design has to match Facebook in some way. FP has been using what Facebook calls the “media header”, but with your Flickr buddy icon instead of your Facebook picture. The problem is, with the new Facebook design, it looks pretty terrible.

Facebook has updated the look for their own photos app, but they haven’t updated it for any developer apps. So I’m left to come up with some other sort of header for FP.

These are some mock-ups I have right now for a header that includes tabs:

And for just tabs (with some sort of header to go above them):

Profile Tab

Probably the most received request right now is for a profile tab in the new profile. I already have a prototype working, but there is a major design decision that has to be made before it can be released: what exactly should go on the profile tab?

Should I take a more Facebook Photos-like approach and put photos/videos with you tagged in them and your photosets at the bottom?

Or should there be a set of choices? Or totally customizable?

I’m leaning towards just photos with you tagged in them, but I also like the idea of choosing the photos that appear on it. I’m open at this point, so please leave your comments, I’d like to hear what you want it to be.

Hi Everyone!

I’ve set up this blog to provide more information on the development of Flickr Photosets. I’ll talk about decisions that come up in the process of writing the app (design and technical) and pretty much anything else relating to development.

Ok, let’s start with where the app currently stands. The new Facebook profile design has added a lot to my development plate and changed my plans for the app.

As of now, the current plan is this:

  • Finish up and release new design to go along with the new Facebook design
  • Update the authorization process
  • Release tagging, notifications, and news feed stories

The first step is to release the updated design. This will make the app look more like Facebook Photos does in the new profile, but with a few select differences to make the app stand out. I’ve held off on this and the next step because I don’t have enough time to spend on keeping the app working in both the old Facebook layout and the new one. As soon as the new FP design is rolled out, everyone will be forced to use the new Facebook. According to Inside Facebook, 60% of users are using the new layout. So I feel like it’s probably an appropriate time to switch the app.

The next step is to update the “authorization” process. Back in the old profile, Facebook apps were added to your account. There was also the ability to “login” to an application. The whole process has changed. You now simply authorize the application to access your information. You then can give it the ability to put a box in your profile, add a tab or information section to your profile, and a few more things. This can add many more steps to do the same things as before, but you know exactly what an app is doing. I have the process working, it’s just a matter of integrating it in to the app.

The final step is to release tagging, notifications, and news feed stories. Coding on tagging is nearly complete, and I’m beginning to work on notifications (for when you tag someone in a photo), and news feed stories (for when you tag people, and when you upload new photos/videos). There will most likely be a beta period for this, I’ll keep you updated as the this gets closer.

My goal is to get these steps done before the end of the year. School takes up a lot of time, but hopefully there will be enough time for me to get all of this done.

I’ll have some more posts in the coming days about some of the design decisions made with the new FP design.

Stay tuned!
