Hi Everyone!
I’ve set up this blog to provide more information on the development of Flickr Photosets. I’ll talk about decisions that come up in the process of writing the app (design and technical) and pretty much anything else relating to development.
Ok, let’s start with where the app currently stands. The new Facebook profile design has added a lot to my development plate and changed my plans for the app.
As of now, the current plan is this:
- Finish up and release new design to go along with the new Facebook design
- Update the authorization process
- Release tagging, notifications, and news feed stories
The first step is to release the updated design. This will make the app look more like Facebook Photos does in the new profile, but with a few select differences to make the app stand out. I’ve held off on this and the next step because I don’t have enough time to spend on keeping the app working in both the old Facebook layout and the new one. As soon as the new FP design is rolled out, everyone will be forced to use the new Facebook. According to Inside Facebook, 60% of users are using the new layout. So I feel like it’s probably an appropriate time to switch the app.
The next step is to update the “authorization” process. Back in the old profile, Facebook apps were added to your account. There was also the ability to “login” to an application. The whole process has changed. You now simply authorize the application to access your information. You then can give it the ability to put a box in your profile, add a tab or information section to your profile, and a few more things. This can add many more steps to do the same things as before, but you know exactly what an app is doing. I have the process working, it’s just a matter of integrating it in to the app.
The final step is to release tagging, notifications, and news feed stories. Coding on tagging is nearly complete, and I’m beginning to work on notifications (for when you tag someone in a photo), and news feed stories (for when you tag people, and when you upload new photos/videos). There will most likely be a beta period for this, I’ll keep you updated as the this gets closer.
My goal is to get these steps done before the end of the year. School takes up a lot of time, but hopefully there will be enough time for me to get all of this done.
I’ll have some more posts in the coming days about some of the design decisions made with the new FP design.
Stay tuned!
